Yoga Teacher Training

An Invitation into Yoga Teacher Training

Welcome! If you’ve found your way here, you likely already sense that yoga is more than shapes on a mat. It’s the exhale that softens your shoulders, the quiet way savasana invites you to let go, the small moments of presence that subtly shift how your day unfolds.

This training is an invitation to look more closely at what underlies the practice you already love. Asana is central to our time together, but our focus extends beyond form to include philosophy, the subtle body, and the discipline of showing up with clarity, curiosity, and care.

Together, we’ll explore steadiness as something lived rather than idealized, and how breath, attention, and awareness shape both experience and choice.

Take your time exploring this page. And if something sparks a question, reach out - I’d love to hear from you. Spots tend to fill quickly, so don’t wait too long to connect.

Warmly,
Debra Mishalove , Director of Teacher Training

Teacher Training Overview

Flow has been training yoga teachers for nearly 20 years. Over that time, this program has been refined through experience what prepares people well, what lasts, and what supports responsible & inspiring teaching.

Many programs rely on scripts and preset sequences, producing teachers who teach from memorization. Flow takes a different approach. We focus on understanding rather than scripts so you can teach with confidence, develop and trust your own teaching voice, and design classes across levels and styles, from restorative to powerful vinyasa, guided by intention and creativity. You’ll graduate ready to create classes that respond to real people in real rooms and truly serve the communities you care about.

At Flow, each training group becomes a community. We gather for thoughtful conversation and shared growth as practitioners and teachers and our time together becomes part of the learning.

“I didn’t want it to end. Choosing this training was one of the best decisions I’ve made.” - Maddie, 2022

We love this training—and we think you will, too. While we could talk about it all day, one of the best ways to get a real sense of the experience is to hear directly from the people who’ve lived it.

Meet Your Teachers

As respected leaders in the local yoga community, our senior teachers bring depth, continuity, and steady mentorship to the training. Rather than rotating outside guest teachers you’ll experience in most teacher trainings, you’ll learn with the same experienced team from start to finish, building meaningful relationships along the way.

  • All sessions are recorded, and you’ll have 3 months after the final weekend to catch up. You can also make up missed content by joining future training weekends at no extra cost.

  • Many participants join simply to deepen their practice. You can also start with our Yoga Studies Track (fewer hours and no teaching practicums, offered at 30% off) and decide later if you’d like to complete certification.

  • Not in a “boot camp” way. We offer a mix of strong, gentle, and restorative practices—and you’ll learn how to adapt for your body and others’.

  • You can pause and resume with a future cohort or make up missed sessions along the way. You have options, and we’ll work with you.

  • I’m nervous about teaching in front of a room even though I want to. Any tips?

  • Expect about 1–3 hours per week of reading and study modules. You’ll also complete 20 yoga classes (at Flow or virtually) during the program. Our curriculum exceeds Yoga Alliance requirements because we’ve added modules we believe truly prepare you.

  • Yes. Nearby parking garages and street parking are available (we recommend the ParkMobile app). We’re also metro-accessible via the Red and Green Lines, and many trainees carpool

  • While each session varies based on the weekend’s focus, you can expect a balanced mix of movement, lecture, discussion, small-group work, and practice teaching. Each session includes breaks, and we provide tea and light treats. You’re also welcome to bring your own snacks and drinks so you can stay nourished throughout the day.

Learning, Community, and Support Beyond Training

At Flow, the training doesn’t end when the program wraps up. We stay connected and continue to support you as you grow, both during the training and beyond.

Flow graduates teach in many settings from Flow and other DC studios to wellness spaces, corporate environments, and community organizations. Some go on to open studios, lead retreats, or create teaching paths that reflect their own values. Training cohorts often become close-knit communities, with friendships that carry on through shared classes, reunions, and staying in touch.

After graduation, you’re invited to:

  • assist public classes and lead community sessions at Flow

  • join practice-teach labs for ongoing feedback and encouragement

  • access continuing education opportunities and module refreshers

Graduates are also welcome to return to future teacher training sessions at no cost for refreshers or to make up missed content.

I am a better yoga teacher and student because I graduated from Flow’s YTT course. Debra and the teaching team, is not only knowledgeable about the discipline yoga but has a deep passion for developing creative, empathic, and connected teachers. The course taught me how to design thoughtful sequences, use trauma informed language, practice purposeful assists, and grow my voice and presence as a teacher. I feel extremely confident and prepared to enter any studio room, as Flow taught me how to teach from my own practice and embodied approach. I am incredibly thankful for Flow’s mentorship, advice, and offerings. I could not recommend their YTT curriculum more!

A note from our Founder & Teacher Training Director

My yoga teaching journey began on a whim. New to DC, I signed up for a class at a local studio. A simple flyer advertising a Yoga Teacher Training caught my eye. Teaching yoga? Never crossed my mind. But something inside whispered "yes."

I'm forever grateful I listened. While I loved my existing marketing career in supporting social justice oriented clients, within months of the training I was leading my own classes from my tiny apartment, and within two years, Flow opened its doors.

For you, this decision might be more carefully considered. Maybe "yoga teacher training" sits on your bucket list, a lingering possibility you've been contemplating. Perhaps you're yearning for a side hustle or want to learn more about the profound impact this practice has. Or maybe you dream of opening your own studio one day!

Whatever your reason, we at Flow want you to know: we've poured our hearts into making this program exceptional.

For two decades, we've guided passionate individuals like you on transformative journeys. Graduates have gone on to open studios, become sought-after teachers, or find deep fulfillment leading smaller groups. Others use their newfound knowledge to enrich their own lives.

No matter your inspiration, we warmly invite you to explore Flow. Read testimonials, join a class, connect with graduates. We believe we've created something truly special – a space for you to blossom as a compassionate and confident yoga teacher, ready to share the gift of this practice with the world.

Have any questions? Don’t hesitate to reach out, I’d love to meet you!

warmly,
